Synology in New Zealand – A History

The History of Synology in New Zealand: How It All Began with VST

Back in 2006, network-attached storage (NAS) was still a niche concept in New Zealand. Businesses and consumers were just beginning to understand the importance of centralised data storage and secure file access. Cloud computing hadn’t yet taken off, and expensive, bulky servers were used to for file sharing, tape and SCSi drives for backups.

That’s when VST saw an opportunity. As a distributor focused on bringing innovative IT hardware solutions to the local market, we were always on the lookout for technology that could make a real difference. When we first encountered Synology, it was a small but ambitious company from Taiwan with a clear vision: to make data management simple, reliable, and accessible for everyone.

Bringing Synology to New Zealand

In 2006, VST officially became the first distributor to bring Synology products into New Zealand. At the time, very few people had heard of NAS, and even fewer understood what it could do. Our early mission was one of education—showing resellers, system integrators, and IT professionals the power of centralised storage.

We started small: a single bay model that operated as a 3-in-1 Server, but once people saw the reliability, performance, and ease of Synology’s DiskStation Manager (DSM) software, interest quickly grew. Word spread fast through the IT community that this wasn’t just another storage box—it was a complete ecosystem for managing, sharing, and protecting data.

Growing the Synology Brand

By the 2010s, Synology had become synonymous with reliable NAS solutions across home, SMB, and enterprise environments. From small creative studios needing quick file access to large organisations demanding secure backup solutions, Synology found its place in every corner of the New Zealand IT landscape.

As Synology evolved, so did our role. VST worked closely with the brand to build local awareness, provide training, and ensure strong technical support for partners and by proxy, end users. From early media reviews and trade show demos to hands-on reseller workshops, we helped grow Synology’s presence from a newcomer to a trusted name in storage and backup.

Our mission has never been just to sell a product—it’s to create meaningful connections between partners and the manufacturer. That’s why we regularly host exclusive events and training sessions, offering New Zealand partners the opportunity to meet directly with Synology representatives, share feedback, and help shape solutions that better fit the local market.

Nearly Two Decades of Partnership

Today, nearly 20 years after that first shipment, VST remains proud to be part of Synology’s journey in New Zealand. We’ve seen the product line expand from simple NAS boxes to comprehensive solutions for data management, surveillance, backup, and cloud integration.

With two decades of hands-on experience, VST has been involved in countless Synology training events and product launches, giving us a deep understanding of the platform from day one. This long-standing expertise has positioned us as the leading local distributor for Synology, providing unmatched pre- and post-sales support across the country.

We go beyond standard manufacturer warranties—because we understand how critical your data is. Our dedicated engineers are here to help when it matters most, and we’ve developed service packs tailored for the New Zealand market, including next-business-day replacements, loan units, and advanced replacement options.

Through every technological shift—from the rise of cloud computing to the hybrid workplace—Synology has stayed ahead by listening to users and evolving its ecosystem. And through it all, VST has remained committed to ensuring New Zealand partners and customers receive the same trusted service, knowledge, and support that helped establish the brand here in the first place.

Looking Ahead

As data continues to grow in both volume and importance, Synology’s mission is more relevant than ever. From cutting-edge all-flash systems to Peta Scale, the focus remains on empowering users with secure, scalable, and easy-to-manage storage solutions.

Synology’s versatile product range is particularly well-suited for New Zealand’s SMB and SME market—offering enterprise-grade capability at a scale and cost that aligns with local business needs. Whether it’s a small office or a growing enterprise, Synology provides solutions that deliver reliability and performance without exceeding budget.

At VST, we’re proud to have been there from the beginning—and we’re just as excited about where Synology is heading next.
